It studied pc. of Louis to the Washington University in medicine and terminated there the study 1954. In the consequence he worked on the Columbia Presbyterian Medical center in New York and national institute the OF Health in Bethesda, Maryland. 1959 he came to the Rockefeller of institutes for Medical Research, where Fritz Albert Lipmann worked.
it received 1978 together with Werner Arber and Hamilton Othanel Smith the Nobelpreis for physiology or medicine "for its discovery of the restriction enzymes and the application of these enzymes in the molecular genetics".
