The department is an organizational basic unit of the administration.

It is a defined part of a German authority with a certain subject. The department of a main departmental head and/or a department manager is led. A department can cover several hundred persons. The origin of the term comes from latin: "“decernere"” for "“decide"”. A departmental head (rarer: Department leader) is therefore a decision maker and always manages a department.
