DMAIC (DEFINE - Measure - analysis - Improve - control - lautsprachlich: di-make) stands for the phases of a process management process. DMAIC is the Kernprozess of the quality beginning in the quality management Six sigma and is used, in order to model processes in such a way that these hold stably a given 6 sigma achievement level.

DEFINE

It is defined who the customers (customers are here very far defined) of the process are and the process which needs of these customers is to fulfill. Whereupon constructing capability characteristics of the process are defined, which are critical for the fulfilment of customer expectations.

Measure

In this phase methods and instruments must be found for the collection by data over the present development of capability characteristics. By means of these instruments data are seized over the functionality of the process.

After conclusion of the phase are present:

  • a data collection plan with data type and data collection method
  • a validated measuring system
  • sufficient sample data for the analysis of the process
  • some provisional evaluations, in order to recognize the basic direction of the problem

Analysis

A goal of this phase is it to identify the causes of the deviation from the defined achievement goals to.

The result of this phase leads possibly to the fact that changes of the problem description or the entire project framework must be made.

Improve

This phase contained the discovery of process connections and the mechanism of new procedures.

Control

Last the found improvements must be embodied and new procedures in the everyday life enterprise. Important it is here to hand over and/or back give the responsibility for the process to the process owner.

The process is continuing supervised in the further process with the developed measuring systems. For deviations of the process which can be expected suitable corrective measures are established.
