Doornkaat is the name of a liquor mark (grain) and also the enterprise Doornkaat AG, which has still its official seat, standing behind it, not however more production in the city the north in East Frisia. The Doornkaat AG belongs since 1991 to the liquor manufacturer Berentzen AG in the Haselnne.
Doornkaat was created 1806 in the north by the Mennoniten originating from Groningen January ten Doornkaat Koolman. It was supported here by the wealthy Norder buyer Cremer. Despite large competition (there were at that time in the north 24 Kornbrennereien) it succeeded with its product. In the course of the decades Doornkaat became even to a Germany far well-known Kornmarke.
The enterprise received besides still further support legs. Thus 1882 a Bierbrauerei in the Norder quarter west guest were opened. Starting from 1930 Doornkaat drove out also own dte (Doka dte). By ship participation the rounded flourishing enterprise its portfolio off.
After the years had brought a large upswing again after the Second World War, a fast descent in and the eighties seventies, which led in the long run also to the sales of the enterprise, took place. This had above all personnel reasons: The boss at that time of the enterprise, Gerhard Doornkaat Koolman ten, were more technician (studied chemist) buyer. Thus on the one hand bad investments took place like the acquisition of a fruit juice factory. On the other hand the enterprise did not find an effective strategy, in order to meet a changed drinking behavior of the population. A product raising the price of by the liquor tax did a remaining.
The sales at Berentzen was the consequence of this fall.
If Doornkaat was for many decades a flourishing enterprise, which offered jobs in its best days, a sales market to the city tax receipts and the farmers of the environment brought, then (at the latest) after 1991 an economical support leg broke away. A majority of the coworkers could be taken over - however already briefly after the assumption no more was not produced in the north. Only the filling of mineral water pc. Ansgari still remained in the city.
It is to be stressed that alone the fall of the Doornkaat did not bring in the future economic problems to AG for the city the north. Already in the decades before several enterprises had had to close (under it for example at the beginning of the 1980er a work of the office machine manufacturer Olympia with several thousand persons employed and already before an iron foundry), which drew an omission of tax receipts and jobs. However Doornkaat might be due to its Germany-far Bekanntheitsgrades the most prominent example.
The family ten Doornkaat Koolman was in the Norder Mennonitengemeinde strongly verwurzelt. From this a strong social and social commitment arose. Thus Doornkaat Koolman resulted by assistance of a Germanists between 1879 and 1884 a dictionary of the ostfriesischen language from Kommerzienrat January ten. 1894 let the enterprise on the in the center of the north a pavilion, which was well accepted by the inhabitants and also as music hall served build. The family members supported strongly the establishment of the Freiwilligen fire-brigade the north and the association for local history Norderland and promoted besides the local deacon eating station.
After searches of the Norder of homeland researcher Dr. Gerhard Cranzler the members of the family never stood during the Nazi dictatorship in the first number of the political activists. Forced laborers were not employed in the company.
In December 1988 created Gerhard ten Dornkaat Koolman the donation specified after it. It won a great importance with capital and since then for East Frisia. Donation purpose are the promotion of science and research, art and culture, the care of the homeland thought, the monument, environmental and nature protection as well as the rescue from mortal danger, in particular to sea.
