The East Africa niche community (English East African Community, EAC) is an economical integration form that eastAfrican countries Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania with the goal of an economic and a customs union.

The EAC (seat of the secretariat is Arusha in Tanzania) aims at an increasingly closer co-operation within the political, economic and legal range up to common organs of the three states.

Since 1 January 2005 is carried out the customs union. For 2009 the monetary union with the East African Shilling is planned.

History

1967 had already brought Kenya as well as Uganda and Tanzania a short-lived Economic Community under the name EAC into being. Apart from the establishment of a Common Market (EACM) the promotion of the Suaheli spread in all three countries was aimed at as one of colonialists not left traffic language. But 1977 broke this community by intergovernmental contrasts and mutual interference.
