Schlegel was the son of the canvas manufacturer and silk wholesale dealer Leonhard Schlegel, which had brought it from conditions to prosperity and with financial allowances for to arms in the free realm city the Isny used itself.

After its father had sat down 1811 in Neapel to the peace, Eduard Schlegel transferred the enterprise in the age of 24 years. It resumed also the arm welfare service begun by its father by donations and cash donations. During the hunger emergency of 1816-1817 received to so each arm and each child arms a loaf bread, altogether 150 loaves per week was weekly distributed.

After the death of the father Leonhard in the year 1824 Eduard Schlegel furnished 1825 in its house in the Isnyer water gate route an Evangelist elementary school, whose teacher he paid. The amount corresponded at the time at that time to the value of approximately 10 to 20 community centres in Isny.

1830 it died at the age of 43 years. An entry in the chronicle of the city minister occupies the affection, which was brought to it: "„The whole city deplored its death "“. A grave speech and a grave poem of relatives were published in the pressure and are received.

Aftereffect

Schlegels foundation school played actually for many decades an important role for the Evangelist education in Isny. Still 1901 were denied the salary of Evangelist Elemantarlehrer mainly by it.

The 1935 as auxiliary school created promotion school Isny were designated 1992 as the first Isnyer school, which received its own name, in Schlegels honours Eduard Schlegel school.
