Edward Jenner [] (* 17. May 1749 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, "† 26 January 1823 ebenda) was an English country doctor, who developed the modern protective inoculation against smallpox.

Jenner was informed to the Cirencester Grammar School, studied anatomy and surgery in London and returned to Berkeley, in order to open its own practice.

The inoculation with living smallpox viruses already in former times in Turkey was practiced and brought by Mary Wortley Montagu to Europe, where it for example by January Ingenhousz one practiced. It was however a most risky prevention measure. Jenner knew the opinion that milking gutters, which had infected themselves with cow smallpox did not get sick usually with the actual smallpox. In May 1796 it undertook an attempt, by inoculating a boy with cow smallpox or Vacciniaviren, which he had inferred from a Kuhpockenpustel. The boy showed itself later than immune to usual smallpox. When its article was rejected of the Royal Society, it undertook further attempts - also with its 11 months old son. In the year 1798 it published its results and had to experience that one tried to make it ridiculous. Critics reproached to it, it are Godless to inoculate humans with welfare serum from a Kadaver to. The method publicised by it became generally accepted nevertheless because of their obvious advantages soon.

Jenner called its procedure "„vaccination "“(dt. Vakzination, of Latin vacca = "„the cow "“). This term stands in English today still for the protective inoculation of a healthy person with weakened pathogens.

Jenner was also an exact nature observer: like that it was it, which stated that a young Kuckuck pushes its "„Stiefgeschwister "“gradually from the nest, until it is fed as an exclusive favorite of its "„hosts "“. For this observation he was selected 1789 to "„the Fellow "“the Royal Society.
