Emergency route is a term from the building code right.

With the emergency routes two protection goals defined in the building codes are to be achieved to the fire protection: in the case of fire the rescue of humans and animals as well as effective fire-fighting operationses to make possible (see "§ 14 of the sample building code (MBO)).

In Germany the building code right in the legislative competence of the Lands of the Federal Republic lies. All countries issued accordingly own building codes, whose regulations are to a large extent uniform to the emergency routes however and orient themselves to the MBO. In the following therefore to the MBO is referred.

"§ the protection goals for the fire protection in structural facilities, according to which the rescue of humans and animals as well as effective fire-fighting operationses must be possible among other things (the term of the rescue contains also the Selbstrettung (escape)) define 14 the MBO. In addition must be prevented to the propagation of fire and smoke.

Due to this protection goal definition the building codes requirements place the emergency routes against the number and the condition of the ways from a building in the free, evenly. At the same time safe exits represent also safe entrances, which the fire-brigade needs for effective fire-fighting operationses. The requirements of the emergency routes bez. Number and kind are specified in "§ 33 the MBO. The structural regulations to the emergency routes (in which way of the propagation of fire and smoke must be prevented) to find itself in "§"§ the 34 - 38 (MBO), together with further requirements at stairs, stair spaces, exits, corridors, windows, doors and Umwehrungen (the construction units thus, which can be part of an emergency route).

'' Formal unconsidered remain in these regulations the so-called special's buildings (schools, hospitals, assembly places, multistoried buildings etc., see "§ 2 (4) MBO), against which according to "§ 51 requirements special in the building permit can be placed. Expression its are the many special construction specifications, those in most countries are build-up-obviously imported (industrial building guideline, garage regulation etc.)
In "§"§ the 34 - 36 is introduced the terms "“necessary stairs"”, "“necessary stair space"” and "“necessary corridor"”. The construction units are named, across which (i.d.R. first, structurally implemented) an emergency route leads. The further meaning of these terms lies in the regulation that each lounge over stairs and corridor must be attainable. According to these regulations e.g. insertable stairs are inadmissible as necessary stairs, whereby a in such a way opened attic may not contain lounges.

Central element "§ 33 (MBO) is the demand after two from each other independent emergency routes in the free for each use unit (e.g. dwelling, practice, shop etc.) with lounges (area, which not only to the temporary stay of humans certainly or suitable are). From each other independently it means that in case of failure the first emergency route second is not affected by it. This demand is limited however by the concession that both emergency routes may lead within a projectile across the same necessary corridor. For all projectiles ebenerdig not lain the first emergency route must lead across necessary stairs. The second emergency route may lead across the evacuation equipment of the fire-brigade (portable ladders or stroke rescue vehicles and/or turning leaders).

'' Also e.g. a technology or a ventilation plant its own use unit can be. Since i.d.R. however no lounges are possible there, the regulations do not apply over emergency routes to such use units. There however if a lounge, e.g. the work/write place of the caretaker, is furnished the regulations seize again.

Similar mechanisms are escape routes and fire-brigade starting zones
