Engineering DATA management (Abk.: EDM) contains the holistic, structured and consistent administration of all expirations and data, those with the development of new or with the change of existing products, that so-called engineering (English), while its entire product life cycle result.

Engineering DATA management systems

EDM systems serve here as basic network and/or as basic platform: The electronic application systems needed during the product development (e.g. CAx applications, Office programs, PPS systems, numerical control robots) are integrated over interfaces to an overall system. The product-relevant information and/or enterprise data is defined, generated, worked on, controlled, distributed and put down secured and/or.

Possible data and documents, which are administered by EDM systems, are: Product configurations (e.g. parts lists), CAD models and - designs, arbitrary kinds of documents in electronic and not electronic form, image files, NCs-Programm, Projekt-und of schedules.

Software centralization and new definitions

Since one sees the fact that it concerns documents of most diverse form here actually predominantly may not surprise it anybody that the term "“engineering DATA management system (EDMS) is replaced"” lately increasingly by the term "“engineering document management system (EDMS)"” (e.g. see the glossary Fraunhofer of the institute for work management and organization), whereby the term of the Datenmanagements continues to go actually as the pure document administration.

But many current document management systems contain already large functionalities (for instance the Groupware IBM/Lotus Notes), why here the generally used conceptualness in the EDP moves generally also rather toward Enterprise content management system. In addition document management systems found lately also to entrance into the Enterprise resource of Planning systems (in the explanation of the document management system of the ERP software SAP R/3-Enterprise there is e.g. a clear reference also to the CAx solutions), i.e. give it also here a clear centralization.

Other conceptualnesses

There is also a similar conceptualness, which developed from the engineering DATA management, that is that to so-called product data management and/or Product DATA management. Others, partly in addition, already outdated terms for engineering DATA management are also: Engineering DATA cousin (EDB), technical information system (TIS), design management system (ZVS).
