An environmental management standard is a general guidance, with whose assistance organizations (enterprise, authorities, etc.) can operate a systematic environmental management and/or develop a structured environmental management system.

Background

Based on international agreements by the technical committee "„environmental management "“(ISO/TC 207) is determined, a committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the standardization need within the range of the environmental management and converted in standards.

Meanwhile became a whole set of environmental management standards, which so-called ISO 14000er-Normen develops. The ISO 14000er-Normen, become, as updates all other ISO standards also, within five years after the appearance of an examination submitted and if necessary.

Examples of environmental management standards

  • ISO 14001: Environmental management systems - requirements with guidance for application
    • It is the most well-known environmental management standard and 1996 for the first time and on 15 November 2004 in an updated version by the ISO was published. It is one of the few standards of this row, on whose basis a certifying is possible by an independent environmental consultant. Most standards of the 14000er-Familie are manuals with a recommending character, i.e. they are to give assistance with the structure and with the care of the environmental management and/or the environmental management system without requirements to fix.
  • ISO 14004: Environmental management systems - general manual over principles, systems and auxiliary instruments
    • An updated version of this standard was published at the end of of 2004 by the ISO.
  • ISO 14015: Environmental management - environmental evaluation of locations and organizations
  • ISO 14020: Environmental markings and - declarations - general principles
  • ISO 14031: Environmental management - environmental performance evaluation - guidelines
  • ISO 14040: Environmental management - ecological balance - principles and general requirements
  • ISO 14064: Environmental management - measurement, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas missions

Organization of the environmental management standards

The standards of the 14000er row can be divided in two categories:

  • Organization-oriented standards
  • Product-oriented standards

Since in many organizations management systems integrated meanwhile cover, thus management systems those at least environmental and quality requirements together, developed are, some manuals of the 14000er-Familie by the ISO 19011 were replaced.
