Eparch (Greek eparchos) was a superior and a commander, in particular the governor of a province.

The Eparchie was those became a Eparchen and also the assigned administrative district. The Byzantine realm was divided in its older time in 64 Eparchien, from which statistic overviews are received:

  • Synekdemos of Hierokles, probably from the time of the emperor Justinian I.
  • Georgios Cyprius (around 600 n. Chr.)

The Kingdom of Greece possessed to 1886 59 Eparchen, which were then abolished, up to a short re-establishment from May 1891 to July 1892.
