An equivalence scale standardizes economic resources (incomes, fortunes or expenditures for consumption) of households of different size and/or different structure (e.g. different age structure) in prosperity and/or in poverty investigations.

It reflects therefore both individual need differences and the savings of common housekeeping (the positive scale effects in such a way specified).

An equivalence scale measures according to the necessary proportional increase of household resources when being added a further person, on the condition that the welfare level of the household remains maintaining straight.
