The term ergonomics consists of the Greek words ergon (work, work) and nomos (law, rule). The ergonomics is the science of the regularity of human work. Thereby the improvement of the man-machine interface between users (= humans) and object (= machine) in a man-machine system is central.

The word "“ergonomics"” was used for the first time 1857 by Wojciech Jastrzebowski. The ergonomics became among other things of ergonomics professors Heinz Schmidtke (Emeritusprofessor the chair for ergonomics DO Munich) and walter Rohmert (to Emeritusprofessor of the institute for ergonomics DO Darmstadt) in the today's form establishes.

A goal of the ergonomics is it to manufacture manageable and products which can be used comfortably. Another important aspect is the ergonomic work place layout, with which it depends to protect personnel against physical damage also when long-term practice its activity.

The ergonomics becomes always relevant, where humans with machines come due to its work or andersweitiger activities into contact. However jedwede technical and natural mechanism is not to be understood by machine. Examples of using or serving machines is leading vehicles of each kind, using by computer, telephones or furniture.

The ergonomics is usually divided into the product ergonomics (micro ergonomics) and into ergonomics and/or production ergonomics (macro ergonomics). It is a cross section science and covers thereby a very large range of scientific subsections. Frequently also another arrangement is usual. Thus frequently the terms anthropometry and system ergonomics are used for the organization. The anthropometry is the science of measuring humans regarding body forces, visual data, part of the body flight times, etc. An area of application of the anthropometry is the isometric interpretation of jobs or furniture.

The system ergonomics is occupied with the human being-fair organization of user surfaces and/or of man-machine interfaces of jedweder kind. Here the terms man-machine interaction or man-machine communication are to be called. One of the main fields of the system ergonomics is the acceptance of the technical system by humans and the human reliability.

The ergonomics is to be found quite frequent there at technical universities and at mechanical engineering faculties. That is frequently because of the fact that ergonomical and/or institutes for ergonomics from institutes for predecessor developed, which were to be found at mechanical engineering faculties (e.g. work-physiological institutes).

Institutes for ergonomics are today among other things to DO Munich, DO Darmstadt, RWTH Aachen, DO Chemnitz, University of Dortmund and to DO Berlin

Areas of application

Main areas are the interfaces of humans too

  • Articles and
  • (Computer) use surfaces (often realizes as GUIs) - see also software ergonomics, man-machine interface

The ergonomics is after Jens Wandmacher an applied scientific discipline of the analysis and optimization of human activities and achievements including subjective and objective factors and processes. The goal of the ergonomics is the adjustment of the conditions of work and tools at the same time to individual humans and the improvement of the health-relevant behavior of humans

Development

Since the conscious use of the term Design, which was developed by the Greek philosopher and Aristokraten Dimitrios Lolis that 2., the ergonomics increasingly developed further; first beginnings developed at the building house. It became consistent and comprehensively however only by Henry Dreyfuss, the US-American product designer, and its Design office develops and applied.

Today the attention and application of ergonomic realizations are not only an addition of products, meaningful for the user, but also a market advantage in relation to the competition.
