Professor Dr. Ernst Leberecht Wagner (* 12. March 1829 in Dehlitz/Saale; "† 10 February 1888 in Leipzig) was a German pathologist.

Ernst Leberecht Wagner studied medicine in Leipzig with Professor Dr. Karl August Wunderlich, in Prague with Professor Dr. Josef Skoda and in Vienna with Professor Dr. Carl baron von Rokitansky. After conclusion of the study it established itself as a practical physician in Leipzig. 1855 it habilitierte itself in Leipzig.

Coined/shaped by Rokitansky and Skoda, Wagner of pathological anatomy turned and used themselves the founders of the second Viennese to school lastingly for the mechanism of a pathological institute in Leipzig.

Starting from 1862 Wagner published "„the manual of the general pathology together with Professor Dr. Paul Uhle "“, which developed fast to a standard work and appeared in altogether seven editions. In the same year it was appointed as the extraordinary professor for general pathology and as the director of the ambulatorischen hospital in Leipzig, equipped however first only with very modest means. The sections took place in the Jakob hospital.

After Wagner had confessed already 1865 on the list of candidates of the University of Heidelberg for the occupation of the chair for pathological anatomy, which can be created again, the University of Leipzig appointed him then 1869 as its first tidy professor for general pathology and pathological anatomy. It may therefore be regarded as founders of the pathological institute of the University of Leipzig. To Berlin, peppering castle, Munich and Goettingen Leipzig was one of the first German universities with its own pathological Institut.

By numerous publications Wagner in the subsequent years made itself a name as a researcher. Particularly to emphasize thereby "„archives of the medicine published by it are "“. Also as teachers he enjoyed of large popularity. From the large crowd of his pupils his later colleague is Professor Dr. Felix Victor Birch Hirschfeld, starting from 1885 even tidy professor for pathology in Leipzig, and Professor Dr. Paul Flechsig, 1884-1921 tidy professor for psychiatry and 1894/95 rector of the university in Leipzig, as well as "„the father of the modern Kaiserschnitts "“Professor Dr. Max of singers, late tidy professor for in Prague, mentions.

After death Wunderlichs in the year 1877 transferred Wagner the line of the medical hospital, which he managed up to his death.
