Paul Eugen Bleuler (* 30 April 1857 in Zollikon with Zurich; "† 15 July 1939 in Zollikon) was a Swiss psychiatrist.

Achievements

Admits became Bleuler particularly by its description of the schizophrenia (1911: Dementia praecox or group of the Schizophrenien), with which it had replaced the past term Dementia praecox from Emil Kraepelin. For Bleuler ambivalence was the Hauptsympton of the schizophrenia.

Bleuler coined/shaped 1911 also the term Autismus as well as the designation disease Bleuler.

Bleuler was at the time at that time the only full professor of the psychiatry, which with the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud argued. Contrary to most scholars of its time Bleuler did not go out of a clear separation between mental health and illness. Its work is based on one around details endeavored view of each individual case and the development of the person of the patient. Remarkable is here in particular the occupation with "„the illusion worlds of "“individual patients and the reality-referred interpretation of their expressions.

The moreover one developed Bleuler of it designated "„Udenotherapie in such a way "“. This means the fact that one is to heal diseases not immediately with blind actionism but the natural operational sequence of the illness to be waiting is, and thus often also a healing reaches.

In a time, in which for the treatment of the schizophrenia and other illnesses no medicamentous therapy was available, Bleuler often reached an improvement of the symptomatology by improvement of the general-health conditions and by personal allowance. It was thus also one first, which referred to this connection and a break with the classical "„lunatic asylum caused "“, which had been not much more than a pure institute for safe-keeping and pretty often to a mental safe-keeping draw of the patients had led. Bleuler represented partly like its predecessor Augusts Forel eugenische and racistic opinions.

Life

To his resolution for the psychiatry probably among other things the mental illness of its sister contributed. Bleuler studied medicine in Zurich (conclusion 1881). The following stations of its life led it as Assistenzarzt to the psychiatric university clinics Waldau and as well as to study stays in Paris and Munich. From 1886 to 1898 Bleuler was a Chefarzt of the psychiatric hospital Rheinau, before he changed 1898 to its place of residence lying more near. There he was from 1898 to 1927 director as well as a tidy professor for psychiatry at the medical faculty of the University of Zurich.

After the death of Eugen Bleuler his son Manfred Bleuler resumed his work. He procured the new editions of the standard work of its father text book of the psychiatry, which appeared 1916 for the first time and contained at that time already eugenische views, starting from 1937. Into the editions, which 1937 and 1943 in Nazi Germany appeared, Manfred Bleuler of essays of race public health specialists inserted such as Hans Luxenburger and Friedrich Meggendorf. In the postwar editions for many decades of of the highly regarded standard work these insertions were again erased and by referring to psychiatric methods such as Lobotomie (brain operations) and Neuroleptika (chemotherapies) replaces.
