Eugen Johann Christoph Esper (* 2. June 1742 in Wunsiedel; "† 27 July 1810 in attaining), also Eugenius Johann Christoph Esper mentioned, was a German Entomologe, Botaniker and a pathologist.

Esper and its brother Johann Friedrich Esper (1732-1781) were made familiar for already early age by their father Friedrich Lorenz Esper, a large nature friend and Botaniker, with natural history. Casimir Christoph Schmidel (1718-1792), professor for Botanik, guessed Eugen Esper to break its theology study off and to study instead with him natural history.

It received its doctor for philosophy at the University of attaining with the doctor work De to 1781 varietatibus specierum in productis. Starting from the following year he taught there only as a professor specially full professor, then starting from 1797 as a professor full professor for philosophy. Starting from 1805 it led the department for natural history at the University of attaining. Owing to its work the collections of minerals, birds, plants, shells and in particular those of the insects at the university grew very fast.

In his spare time Professor dedicated itself Dr. Esper to the study of nature and the preparation of his manuscripts over natural history. He was an author of a series of books and Monographien, like for example the butterflies in illustrations after nature with descriptions (1776-1807). These were plentifully illustrated: Minerals, birds, plants, shells and insects on 438 colored handdrawn boards. A second edition brought out Toussaint of Charpentier (1779-1847) 1829 to 1839. This is following a very important work over butterflies, the system. Therein also Erstbeschreibungen of butterflies from the collections of Johann Isaac baron von Gerning (1767-1837) are, who are today in the museum Wiesbaden and collection property the famous Anna contains Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717).

Esper was also first, the investigated. Thus it is considered as a founder of this important branch of the pathology as science.
