The seal examined security (gs character) certifies that a product corresponds to the requirements equipment and product safety law (GPSG), e.g. in safety rules of the professional associations, the DIN and EN standards or other generally recognized rules of the technology is concretized. Certifying is to secure the user and third with intended use, in addition, during foreseeable misapplication before damage.

During the gs examination it is examined whether the product keeps the requirements of the GPSG. If the product falls under European guidelines (for example low-voltage guideline or becomes machine guideline or EMV guideline), thereby also the requirements of these guidelines examined. In addition also an evaluation belongs whether the operating instructions are understandable and complete. Functional tests belong only so far to the check extent, how it is necessary for the examination of security.

The gs character is thus no general quality character. The quality over the life span of a product is not examined.

In order to be allowed and a product-related certificate too receive to attach the gs character, the manufacturer its product of a certified inspection station (gs place must, e.g. VDE, LGA, INNOVA HP, of a design examination submit. A list of all gs places is available with the Federal Institution for industrial safety and industrial medicine.

To the maintenance of the certificate the gs place control measures leads (e.g. Monitoring of the production plant) through. With the control measures it is examined whether the produced product corresponds still to the examined design or was made changes. This usually annual inspection contains also an examination of the quality department and the final product examination.

When relevant changes in the product the manufacturer must inform the gs place. Relevant changes are all changes, which could above all impair the conformity with the GPSG and deviations to the test report provided from the inspection station to mean. The inspection station must check whether the made changes require a check or depending upon that a change of the test report. Depending upon change the changed product of a repeated check is subjected.

The gs character can be awarded for technical media and for use-finished consumer products (e.g. Machines, a handicraft witness, toys, electrical appliances, lights, household appliances or furniture).

Certifying is voluntary contrary to the CE-marking. The CE-marking is an indication, which regulates the free goods traffic in Europe and which the manufacturers in sole responsibility apply. The CE-marking is therefore neither a quality character still another indication of product security.

The gs character is the only legally regulated test character in Europe for product security. All other indications such as ENEC, VDE, TœV, BG etc. are private indications of individual test or certifying places or agreements between test houses.
