The field things master was to times of the land farmhand armies of the commanders in chief of the artillery. After the field captain and the field marshal he was a highest officer of the army.

One understood the cannon with its entire material, which was served of war gentlemen by the and their helpers after a freiwilligen contract with that by "“things"”. All things stood under the instruction of the general field things master, with the Frenchmen Grand maitre d'artillerie. This title was already usual before the introduction of actual cannons since Philipp VI. (1328-1350) and referred to the earlier war machines.

In Prussia 1898 in place of the weapon section in the war Ministry a Feldzeugmeisterei were created, at whose point a field things master stood. He dressed the rank of a division commander and had for the procurement to ensure preparation and administration of the means and the field equipment as well as for the personnel needed for it.

1906 replaced the inspection of the technical institutes to Bavaria by a Feldzeugmeisterei. Saxonia had a Zeugmeisterei with a major general (upper things master) at the point.

In Austria Hungary the rank of a field things master (shortened FZM) was second highest general rank, the stage between the field marshal second lieutenant and the field marshal for the generals come out from the infantry and the artillery. The field things masters had accordingly the descriptor "“Excellency"”.
