By financial capital one can understand the institutions, which obtain a net yield, by lending money at interest or transact comparable credit and cash transactions on the financial markets (stock broking, insurance transaction, old age pension insurances). Other forms of capital would be for instance industrial capital and commercial capital.

One can understand by it in addition, the financial resources, the Schuldforderungen to others. In the following the financial capital is institutionally represented:

The term financial capital designates the whole of the banks, shareholders or large finance companies (insurance, pension funds and other Kapitalsammelstellen), which affect the restaurant happening by their plant decisions on the capital market. The net yield of the financial capital does not depend simply on the economic growth of the "“homeland"”, there the investment trusts their capital investment into particularly profitable enterprises, real estates etc. to invest can and above all also abroad. In the long run however only the net yields can be obtained on the financial markets, which can be obtained also in the producing economy. "“Taking"” of the financial markets off from the "“material"” basis is thus if necessary temporarily possible.

The marxism uses the term "“financial capital"” however in something other sense. In the Marxist terminology the contentwise determination of this term decreases/goes back on Rudolf Hilferding and W. Ith Lenin. It describes not only above, but rather the structural growing together of the bank capital with the industriellen capital. That means that - so at least Hilferding and Lenin - which appear large companies of the financial area (banks, insurance) and the handels and industrial trusts over mutual share as well as personnel exchange (executive committees, supervisory boards) increasingly as unit, evenly as "“financial capital"”, whereby the banks would hold however the determining role. So understood this term is important for the Lenin' theory of the imperialism and the Stamokap.
