Finschhafen is a district in at the northeast coast of the Morobe province of Papua New Guinea, distinguished by corral reefs. It is designated after the port of the same name. Finschhafen is because of the Salomon lake northeast from the Huon gulf in the proximity of the place saddle mountain at the cape Kretin.

The port was discovered 1884 by the German researcher Otto Finsch. 1885 were created the city as post of the German colony and designated after the discoverer of the port bay. Finschhafen principal place of the German colony was occasional. 1891 were left it because of a malaria epidemic disease and ten years later 1901 was again justified. From the German colonial age is still the house of the lutherischen mission company at the place.

In the Second World War was Finschhafen between Japanese and Americans hard contests. Many houses were destroyed and the city was developed somewhat far far away in the proximity of the military airport built by Japanese soldiers. The airport was removed after American conquest and for the important base of the US army, on which above all units with black soldiers were stationed. Admits is the city today also by this now civilian used airport (contraction FIN).
