FinTS stands for "“Financial Transaction services"” and is a German standard for the enterprise of on-line Banking. FinTS is the successor of on-line Banking standard HBCI.

Technical characteristics

FinTS contains safety procedures with electronic signature (smart card or produced RSA as well as the safety procedure PIN/TAN. FinTS understands itself as building block principle; Authentication procedures, business transactions, financial data formats and minutes are defined individually in each case.

Possible uniform safety medium is characterised in particular by the introduction of the SECCOS HBCI Signaturkarte as. With this signature map an obligatory declaration in the electronic course of business can be made. In addition the safety procedures were adapted to the current state of the art, e.g. an increase of the key length (1024 to 2048 bits) became made. The past PIN/TAN extension was taken up to FinTS as alternative safety procedure for HBCI.

From technical aspect FinTS messages build, which will transfer over Internet between banks and customers, since version FinTS 4,0 on the XML Sprachstandard specified by the W3 consortium up. The integration with other Zahlungssystemen is facilitated by the consistent use of XML signatures, XML Schemen and XML

Supporting banks

At present loan banks within the range of the GAD FinTS support. Other institutes accomplish first tests with FinTS.

History

In the year 2002 the advancement of HBCI was published as FinTS version 3.0. The FinTS 3,0 standard contains the safety procedure pin/Tan as well as the use of signature maps opposite the HBCI forerunners additionally. Before the publication of this version the German association of savings banks had inserted a version named HBCI+, with which the earlier HBCI version 2.2 had been extended by a PIN/TAN Sicherheitsverfahren. In the version FinTS 3,0 was then taken up this procedure as alternative safety solution to the FinTS standard.

In the year 2004 the version FinTS 4,0 was introduced. In this version all internal data structures were changed over completely to XML and XML pattern, used HTTPS as communication protocol and introduced further new interfaces (e.g. www portals).

HBCI PIN/TAN is not identical to FinTS

Occasionally HBCI is equated with PIN/TAN by many credit institutes and software producers with FinTS. From the credit institutes the HBCI+ variant mentioned above was mostly used initially in place of a FinTS standard. This HBCI+ used also the definitions of the HBCI standard, however not the PIN/TAN Sicherheitsmechanismus specified in FinTS. Even if FinTS used the computing centre became, it would have to read in this connection correctly "“FinTS with PIN/TAN procedures"”. The PIN/TAN mechanism of the specification FinTS deviates in some points from HBCI+ (the PIN/TAN extension of the HBCI version 2.20). FinTS is a component system-based electronics Banking standard (see above), but no individual safety procedure.
