In many military armed forces the first officer (English "executive more officer (XO) ") is the deputy and a second in the command string after the Kommandierenden officer.
The first officer relieves the Kommandierenden officer, by taking over the organization of the daily expiration of service, so that its superior has time and peace, the next actions of the unit to plan. Likewise the first officer takes over the command as a deputy with absence of the commander. Therefore this post is usually a further section on the way to the own command.
In the British Army the first officer is called "Second in COMMAND "(2i/c). On smaller ships of the Royal Navy, e.g. submarines or frigates, the first officer is a roofridge lieutenant or is in such a way addressed. On larger ships, on which the post is usually filled out by one COMM other, it is designated independently of its rank than "that COMM other ".
