Fleet admiral was the maritime rank of the GDR for the army general.
In the GDR it was settled as a four-star admiral above the admiral, whereby it must be noted that the People's Navy did not know a flotilla admiral and the fleet admiral therefore nevertheless the admiral of the Federal Navy was comparable.
The rank became to 25. March 1982, just as the rank however never lent Marshal of the GDR, imported. With the name choice fleet admiral finally succeeded general admiral and/or large admiral as counterpart to the Soviet navy in relation to the earlier German ranks. In November 1989 both ranks were again abolished, since the acting Minister was only Vice Admiral and with assumption of office to admiral one had only promoted.
