The franc Starling mechanism describes an autonomous automatic control loop in the heart, i.e. the connection between filling and ejection achievement: The more largely the volume of the blood flowing in during the Diastole is the larger, is also with the following Systole (the pump impact) ejected volumes. The heart pumps, which gets it.

Kraft of the heart muscle cells hangs of read out off, thus of its pre-loading before beginning of the contraction. In certain borders it is the higher, the more the Sarkomere of the muscle cells is lengthened. The maximum force is over developed with a length of 2,6. This length is not exceeded when recovering normally.

The blood volume flowing in varies with the physical activity, with the body situation - see Orthostase reaction - and even from impact to impact with rhythm disturbances. The franc Starling mechanism guarantees the appropriate heart function.

It was described later by the physiologists Otto franc and Ernest Starling at the isolated heart and at the heart lung preparation.
