As Freikorporal (also Gefreitenkorporal) in the territorial armies of the holy Roman realm of German nation (usually noble) the cadets were tituliert. The Austrian field marshal prince Eugen von Savoyen is considered as an inventor of this mechanism.
Exempted from the obligations of the remaining NCOs to a large extent, the Freikorporal was usually assigned the carrying of the flag.
In Prussia the Freikorporal between the Korporalen and the Sergeanten of the company ranked.
The candidates occurred usually in still juvenile age the regiments. The transport was generally expressed after the military basic training. Pretty often however the candidate had to bring one waiting period of several months or years behind itself, which he completed in crew rank or as Korporal. The Potsdamer regiment of king infantry, admits as giant guard or "long one of chap", did not count not few noble soldiers, who handicraft-associate with farmer sons and in line up and for member stood. After several years of reproach-free service every now and then also not-noble NCOs moved up to the Freikorporal, and later to the officer.
In Prussia the rank of the Freikorporals was abgeschaftt after 1806. To his place now the wo1 and the Portepee wo1 stepped.
The later Hussar general Hans Joachim of Zieten was with 16 years Freikorporal in the regiment Schwendy.
