The term Freimarkt (and/or Frey market) designates originally in the Middle Ages usually by church side or privilege for foreign buyers, granted from city municipal authorities, to a certain date in a municipality/a city goods "“to offer for sale"”. (J.G. economic encyclopedia, 1858 - on-line: )

The earliest documents in this regard are at the beginning 10. Century to settle and limited this right first to a date per year only very late - in 17. and v.a. for 18. Century - this right was extended due to increasing power by civil Manufakturen and dealers gradually by further dates: First in consequence (e.g. 4.Sonntag after Easter), then in complete containment of Christian dates (Easter/Christmas), and as markets of several days.

A relatively well-known example: that of Bremen Freimarkt in Northern Germany, which changed itself in the course of the time to a people celebration.

In addition: Hildesheim, Passau, Tamsweg (Austria) u.v.m.

The term "“Freimarkt"” is limited to the German-speaking countries (D, CH, experiences however quite analogies in other languages as well as historically an expansion on general political and/or economic connections and theories e.g. over free trade. (see: German legal dictionary - on-line: )
