Furness, Withy & CO. Ltd. a British shipping company with head office was in west Hartlepool and operated a successful freight and passenger airline service to North America.

History

The brothers Thomas and Christopher Furness entered 1878 into the navigation business, and 1884 bought Christopher Furness in throw in from Edward Withy in west Hartlepool. 1885 opened the two partners a common service with the Wilson LINE from Newcastle to New York town center, which under the name Wilson Furness LINE firmierte.

1891 withdrew itself Wilson from the enterprise, to it into Furness, Withy & CO. Ltd. one renamed with a fleet of beginning 18 cargo ships. CO. and the Norfolk & North American S.N. CO. Ltd. the increasing Imperium added. 1911 acquired Furness, Withy 50% to the Houlder Bros. & CO. and the small coastal shipping company London Welsh S.S. CO took over. completely. one bought George Warren's White dia. moon S.S. CO to 1912. up and it firmierte as George Warren & CO. over, one bought 50% at the John clay/tone LINE to 1914.

1916 followed the assumption of the renowned Prince LINE, and the opening of the South America airline services. In this time the fleet of Furness, Withy & CO covered. Ltd. about, one the largest shipping company of the world was based 215 ships - usually freighters - on the number of ships with distance.

1917 were created the Rio Cape LINE as new daughter shipping company and 1921 followed the establishment of the Bermuda & west Indies S.S. CO. 1922 became the shipping company G. Warren & Co. in Warren LINE renamed, and London Welsh S.S. CO. Ltd. sold. 1929 took place the assumptions of Cairn LINE and talks CROSS LINE, the Gulf LINE was however dissolved and their ships to the Bermuda & west the Indies S.S. CO. transferred. In the same period also the airline services to the US-American and Canadian Pacific ports over the Panama channel were opened.

After the collapse of the Royal Mail LINE - 1931 - Furness, Withy 1933 took over the shipping company, Shaw, Savill & the Albion Steamship CO. one bought the remaining shares the John clay/tone LINE to 1934 and fused her with the Warren LINE to the Johnston Warren LINE over, the Neptune S.N. CO. in the same year one dissolved and one transferred its ships of the new shipping company. 1937 one acquired 50% at Royal Mail LINE/Pacific S.N. CO.

1965 one bought up the remaining shares to the RML/PSNCo Group. 1968 one acquired the Houlder LINE completely and 1973 still the shipping company Kaye, Son & CO. Ltd.

1970 consisted the Furness, Withy Imperium of the following shipping company park:

  • Furness, Withy & CO. Ltd.
  • Shaw, Savill & Albion LINE Ltd. (SS&A)
  • Royal Mail LINE Ltd. (RML)
  • Pacific Steam navigation Company Ltd. (PSNCo)
  • Prince LINE Ltd. /Rio Cape LINE Ltd.
  • Manchester of liner Ltd.
  • Houlder LINE Ltd.
  • Johnston Warren LINE Ltd.
  • Bermuda & west Indies LINE Ltd.
  • Kaye, Son & CO. Ltd. (since 1973)

By the airplane and by the introduction containers caused changes in the navigation, demanded also from Furness, Withy & CO. Ltd. their victims. Into the 1970er years were continuously downhill and 1980 took place the assumption via the shipowner C.Y originating from Hong Kong. Tung.

Tung sold the group of shipping companies 1990 for approximately 170 Mill. USD to the German - to Dr. Oetker Company belonging - shipping company Hamburg south, in this business was only a container ship, as well as some airline services and the rights of the use of a name by Furness, Withy of bought up shipping companies contain.

Furness, Withy & CO. within that Hamburg south has at present only administrative tasks.
