A gel scooter is a special form of the ball-point pen, which uses an aqueous gel instead of an oily paste as ink. Since the ink is thickened (usually by a Polysaccarid such as Xanthan), can also large pigments in the ink is held, without setting off. This makes the use of effect ink possible (Glitzertinte, pigment ink for letters on dark paper).

Design

The gel scooter consists ink of a containing tube made of polypropylene, which flows into a metal point and is calm usually in a shank. In order to prevent a draining of the ink, the ink column is locked to the rear by a plug made of silicone. With a cap locked pins have a seal for the Schreibspitze in this, while gel scooters with pusher mechanics contain a spiral spring in their Schreibspitze, which seals the ball with nonusage against the version of the Schreibspitze.

Function

The characteristic of the ink is their viscosity, which decreases with creation of a shear stress dramatically. The rotating motion of the write ball produces so high shearing chip now gene at the boundary surface for the ink column that the ink is locally liquefied and similarly as with an ink scooter be written out can. The ink river arising with it amounts to the five to tenfold its a ball-point pen, whereby the write ball is very well lubricated. In addition, this effect causes a very easy, sliding write feeling, is responsible for the short writing length of the gel scooter. Side effects are the structure of ink remainders at the gap between ball and version, which can to be delivered on change of the writing direction suddenly and to the Klecksen lead, and the occurrence of double lines, since the ball accumulates the delivered ink on the left and on the right its course.

Schreibspitzen

The version mostly consists of high-grade steel, and the write ball from tungsten carbide or ceramic(s). The ball diameter lies usually between 0,5 and 1.2 mm, whereby East Asian products up to 0.3 mm are available.

Countries of origin

The largest manufacturer is Japan, where this kind of pin was developed into the 1980er years (important manufacturers are pilot, university ball and Pentel). In the last years beside it China was established as substantial manufacturers of cheap gel scooters.
