The expression general captain designates

• in earlier Spain an agency, the commander and/or military governor of a military district, which exercises partially also political and judicial apart from military functions. The military districts of Spain are actually identical to the regions.
• in Spain today the highest general rank of the army, which corresponds for instance to the army general
• in older sources the name for that commander in chief of an army, for which over the Obristen stands, usually however than general captain designation, see also field captain
• More rarely the lowest general rank of different armies, for instance the Brigadier General.
• More frequently similarly service rank captain = captain also general captain.
