The general inspector of the German Federal Armed Forces (GenInsp) is a highest-ranking general or admiral of the Federal Republic of Germany. He is a military advisor of the Federal Minister of Defense and the Federal Government. It is responsible to the Secretary of Defense for the development and realization of the total conception of the military defense and has at its side ever an inspector for army, Air Force, navy, and armed forces basis. In the context of its tasks it is however not authorized instruction opposite the inspectors, in the sense of an troop-official superior. It manages the operations staff of the armed forces and one speaks gladly of the "general without command".
The general inspector of the German Federal Armed Forces is appointed by the Federal President on suggestion of the Federal Minister of Defense, its term of office does not depend however not on that of the Federal Minister of the defense. It has its service seat at the Federal Ministry of the defense in Berlin.
