General of the infantry designates:

1. a general rank in former German ground forces (imperial army, realm resistance and German armed forces), regularly second highest rank after the colonel general. Kavallerieoffiziere were promoted accordingly to general of the Kavallerie, artillery officers to the general of the artillery. In the armed forces it in addition the equivalent ranks general of the armored troops, general gave to the supply troop, general of the mountain troops, general of the paratroopses, general of the Signal Corps. The NVA did not know the rank, the general of the infantry corresponded here the colonel general.
