Steel was beside Johann Joachim cup main founder of the Phlogiston theory, which was only disproved by Antoine Lavoisier. Also he discovered many characteristics of the alkali metals, metallic oxides and acids. Steel can be considered as important forerunners of the Psychosomatik. Like today it warned many psychologists of the overestimation of purely anatomical, physical and chemical processes during the disease research and - treatment. Sigmund Freud anticipating it accepted an unconscious, which affect strong the consciousness and above all the body. The soul builds the body away, taught it. Since all movements and changes have their seat in the soul, then steel concluded, would have to be also all diseases finally mental origin. In its pathologies brought it theories of the Psychoanalytikerin Karen Horney, by assuming, to diseases closer would develop themselves from contradicting will tendencies of the soul, which not to dissolve to be able themselves and therefore to a symptom to change have. It recognized the usefulness of the fever as logical defence reaction of the body on infections. It believed to be able to solve by causing artificial contradictions conflicts kathartisch. The choice of its means appears from today's viewpoint every now and then grotesque. Steel represented amazingly modern theories nevertheless for its time.
