George Nicolas Papanicolaou (* 13. May 1883 in Kymi, Greece; "† 19 February 1962), Greek apa, was a Greek physician and pathologist.

Its most important development was the Papanicolaou smear in such a way specified (short: Pap smear), with which an early zytologische diagnosis of the cervix cancer in continuous investigations became possible. This investigation is accomplished by routine this very day with the gynecologist. By this simple and economical method and can the occurrence of the cervix cancer, particularly by recognizing the early, left yet be invasiven and easily operationally removable gathering molds, clearly not to be reduced. Furthermore the cervix cancer shows itself by this investigation early, so that by recognizing in an early stage of the illness the of a necessary operation can be reduced.
