George R. Price (* 1922; "† 6 January 1975 in London) was an American Populationsgenetiker. When chemists trained, when actively, he went to teachers and science journalist 1967 to London, where he worked on the Galton Laboratory on the University college London as a theoretical biologist. Three important contributions for evolution and for selection are attributed to it:

  • Extension of the work of William D. Hamilton over relative selection (kin selection) by the Price formula
  • Introduction of the concept of the evolutionary stable strategy (ESS) together with John May pool of broadcasting corporations Smith, a central concept of the game theory
  • Formalizing of Ronald Fisher fundamental theorem of the natural selection.

Loaded with problems Price converted from the atheism to the Christianity, and after it had given all its possession to the arms, it killed itself 1975 even.

Biografie

James Swartz (2000) wrote a detailed Biografie over Price.

Early years

Price was born 1922. Its father was an electrician and died as George was 4 years old. Its nut/mother was a former opera singer. The family fought itself by the large depression. It had an older brother Edison. After the attendance of a public school in New York town center, Price 1943 reached a conclusion in chemistry at the university of Chicago. it received its doctor degrees to 1946 from the same university, after it had cooperated in the Manhattan project. 1947 he married Julia Madigan. Their relationship was tension, there George a militant Atheist, its wife a practicing Katholikin was. They had two daughters, Annamarie and Kathleen, and could 1955 be separated.

Early occupation career

Between 1946 and 1948 Price teacher for chemistry at Harvard University and Berater for the Argonne was national Laboratory. Between 1950 and 1957 he was scientific coworker in medicine at the University OF Minnesota. He worked among other things on Fluoreszenzmikroskopie and liver perfusion. 1955 and 1956 he published two articles in the magazine Science, in which he criticized the pseudoscientific requirements of the Aussersinnlichen perception. As a science journalist it tried to write a book with the title "‚to NO Easy Way'/no lighter way', over the cold war of the USA with the Soviet Union and China. It deplored itself however that the world changed faster than it over it writing could. Thus its book was never terminated.

From 1962 to 1967 it was employed with IBM as advisors for graphic data processing. 1966 it was treated because of thyroid cancer. By the distance of the tumor its shoulder remained partly and it remained dependent on Thyroxin treatment. With the money from its insurance it went beginning 1967 to England around a new life.

In Great Britain

William D. Hamilton could not remember 1996 no more when Price it the first time visited. It remembered that Price had read its work over relative selection. Without training in population genetics or statistics he developed the Price formula, a covariance equation, which indicated the change of the allele frequency of a population. Although the first part of the equation before of Alan Robertson and C.C. Left derived was, permitted the second part of the equation application to all kinds of the selection and evolution.

Bekehrung to the Christianity

On 6 June 1970 Price had a religious experience and studied thereafter passionately the new will. He believed that it would have given too many adding in its life. In the special one it wrote a detailed essay "‚the twelve days of Easter', in which it stated that the duration of the events had been longer around death Jesus of Nazareth in the Osterwoche in reality. Later it turned away from the Bible study and dedicated themselves its life of the social work, by helping the emergency-needy in the north of London.

Fisher's fundamental theorem

By its work Price brought light into "‚Fisher's fundamental theorem of the natural selection', which had caused some controversy and misunderstandings. He believed that its equation (the Price equation) was a gift of God, a miracle after its religious experience. Supported homeless people by it making its house available. Sometimes, if the people in its house disturbed too much, it slept in its office. By a building project it had to finally leave its rented house, what made it very unfortunate, since he could make now the homeless person available no more accommodation. It pulled into different houses in the north of London, where it finally killed itself 1975, by slitting itself with gnawing shears the throat. Friends said that he killed himself from despair, since he could not help no more the homeless people.

A commemoration ceremony was held for Price in Euston (not in a church). When only persons of the university were Hamilton and Maynard Smith present, other few were mourning acquaintance, which it by its social work know had learned. Price of contributions were then surveyed for twenty years, since he had worked only for a short time in theoretical biology and had published only few. This changed in the last years by the Biografie, the James Swartz over it wrote and by the articles of Steve franc.
