Gerhard Roth (* 15 August 1942 in Marburg) is a prominent German biologist.

Career/development

Roth studied music science, Germanistik and philosophy from 1963 to 1969 as a scholarship holder of the study donation of the German people in and Rom, where he was attained a doctorate to 1969. Afterwards it studied biology, among other things in Berkeley, California; this secondary study locked it 1974 at the University of with a graduation in Zoologie.

Since 1976 he teaches as a professor for behavior physiology at the university in Bremen, since 1989 in the function of a director of the there institute for brain research. 1997 he was appointed the establishment rector of the Hanse Wissenschaftskollegs. It is member of the Berlin Brandenburgi Academy of Sciences and since 2003 president of the study donation of the German people.

Its main points of research are cognitive and emotional neuro biology with vertebrate animals, theoretical neuro biology and neuro philosophy.

Teachings

Roth is not as representatives of the opinion far away admits become, from view of scientific neuro biology gives it free will or at least can the classical conception of it be kept not upright, a point of view, which also different prominent brain researchers such as wolf Singer or the psychologist Wolfgang prince represents, the latters with the characteristic the fact that he does not fall back to his reason on according to interpreted results empirical research but him for reasons in principle represents, which result from the material presupposed Szientismus. The paradox resulting in from it, which is to consequence the brain part of the designed reality, this reality however to only design itself is, tries he with his own construction to escape, i.e. by the distinction of a "“material brain"” important for its theory from a "“real brain"”. This "“real brain"” regards Roth by definition as a part of the reality, which is designed after a condition by the "“material brain"”. Since after these definition appointments only the reality designed by this "“material brain"” should be accessible, Roth comes to the following and of him formulated result: first of all he explains himself as a technical designer of his theory consistently and expressly even as the Konstrukt of his "“material brain"”; secondly it explains just as logically in addition, to be able to state material nothing over the "“material brain"”.

Nevertheless he raises Konstrukt it for its statements "“elevated requirements on plausibility"” - although he would have to consequently actually raise it in the name of his "“material brain"”, its in reality to be is (or a kind implementing organ, which is to become "“fixed"” after Singer by interconnecting brain).

Criticism

Critics mean to maintain Roths at the same time contradictory statement to be able to state on the one hand nothing over the "“material brain"” but from evenly this "“material brain"” this is it, which designs the entire reality it inclusively and its theory, is a little plausibly and still less convincing, but refers to doubtful and outdated conditions of its theoretical Konjekturen, which decreased/went back like similar constructions of other brain researchers on a neural reductionism and a szientistischen naturalism. Apart from this contentwise criticism professor Gerhard Roth does not apply also for his function as a president of the study donation of the German people as undisputed.
