History

The 50's until 80's-years

In August 1924 under the designation "“German wave GmbH"” a communal facility of all regional broadcasting corporations with seat in Berlin was created. It does not have however with the 1953 established "“German wave"” to anything to do. This went at the 3. May 1953 with German-language sound broadcasting on short wave for the first time on transmission. The greeting address "“to the dear compatriots in all world"” was spoken of Federal President at that time Theodor Heuss. Few weeks later, on 11 June 1953, between the members of the pool of broadcasting corporations the contract was signed over the mechanism of the common short wave program "“German wave"”. The responsibility for the program was first with the northwestGerman broadcast at that time (NWDR), later with the West German broadcast (WDR) in Cologne, so that its respective director was responsible also for the "“German wave"”. Already one year later started the German wave radio endings on English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

In the year 1960 the "“German wave"” was established by Federal law from 29 November 1960 as independent Federal Institution (broadcasting corporation) with seat in Cologne. Thus the order of the pool of broadcasting corporations expired to the WDR to operate the "“German wave"” as communal facility. The DW joined however on 7 June 1962 the pool of broadcasting corporations, so that the original connection of the pool of broadcasting corporations with the DW was repaired.

1962 were extended the radio broadcasting program. In the future the German wave would send Turkish, Russian, Polish, Czech, Slowakisch, Hungarian, Serbian and Croatian additionally on Persian. 1963 follows Kisuaheli and Haussa for Africa, Indonesian as well as Bulgarian, Romanian and Slovenian. In the same year the DW sent also for the first time film copies away for the television. Starting from 1964 the DW would send also on Greek, Italian, Hindi and Urdu, starting from 1970 on Paschtu and Dari. Starting from 1974 the DW received a new radio house in Cologne, the inauguration took place to 1980.

90's

On 1 April 1992 the German wave with German and the DW-TV from Berlin started English-language television program into the active television time age. The programs are radiated over satellite and continued to develop in the subsequent years. In the meantime also on Spanish one sends. In DW-TV few years before the started RIAS-TV came up. 1992 began the DW also with transmissions on Albanian.

In the apron of the new broadcast structure of the federation, which led 1994 to the dissolution of the Deutschlandfunk (DLF) as independent broadcasting corporation and/or its transfer into the broadcasting station Germany radio, the German wave 1993 transferred some foreign language transmissions of the DLF. One year later started the DW under "“www.dwelle.de"” their Web operational readiness level and was thereby the first public broadcasting corporation in Germany, which was represented in the World Wide Web.

In the year 2000 programs started in Ukrainian language, and 2001 began the DW with the radiant emittance of the television program "“German TV"”, which is marketed first only in North America over Pay TV platforms and since 2002 a full program is. However straight therefore sufficient spectators could not be won, so that the transmitter stops its enterprise starting from 2006.

Removal into the building

In June 2003 the DW of Cologne moved into the building for political reasons to Bonn; vorgeblich because of the asbestos load in the areas of the old radio house. The removal expenses were estimated in the business report 2002 with more than 15 million euro.

The DW suffers from substantial financial and personnel shortening. Within five years the household was gone back until 2004 around approx. 75 million euro. The number of the places was reduced since 1994 of 2.200 to 1.200. The cuts will in all probability continue to go and restructuring necessary will make.

The Bundestag adopted a new DW-law, which defines the German wave contrary to other public programs than trimedial and makes thus on-line appearance DW-World.de a equal medium beside DW-TV and DW-radio on 28 October 2004. DW-World.de is represented in the Internet in 30 languages. Emphasis languages are: German, English, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese for Brazil and Chinese.
