The German Zentralbibliothek for economic science (ZBW) in Kiel is according to own data the world-wide largest special library for economiceconomics literature and is part of the institute for world economy (IfW).

Together with Institut for world economy the ZBW of the science community Gottfried William Leibniz (WGL shortens, formerly blue one list) belongs on. IfW and ZBW are financed ever to the half by the federation and the countries. On the sequential promotion of WGL institutes the Bund-Laender-Commission decides again and again again for educational planning and research promotion (BLK) in irregular distances.

Sammelauftrag

As Zentralbibliothek the ZBW has available the Sammelauftrag to procure economiceconomics and economiceconomics literature (in particular national economy and world economy) world-wide to reproach and place to the scientific public both locally and on-line ones by document delivery services. Apart from the above-mentioned literature the ZBW collects also empirical restaurant literature, business statistics, discussion papers, text books, theses and business reports of enterprises. With the USB Cologne there is a division of labor concerning the literature acquisition, since the USB Cologne possesses the marketing and management as special assembly area.

Library existence

The existence of the ZBW covers according to annual report 2004 on 2,7 million volumes (Jahresperiodika, Monographien, magazines etc.). The number of current magazines is indicated as 19.265 titles, those of the Internet documents as 40.000. For the sources of Internet a document server exists. As all scientific libraries the ZBW does not have because of copyright the possibility of digitizing and of offering as full texts over Internet their collected literature completely. Nichtsdesdotrotz are according to annual report 2004 43% of all magazines in electronic form locally available. The ZBW has licenses for 22 electronic data bases.

Literature development

Up to the year 1985 for listing the catalog system of the former library leader William were used. The system was taken over and developed further 1952 by the library of the German federal daily. Today a large part of the Periodika, Monographien, magazines and electronic sources is opened not only essentially but with that standard thesaurus economy (STW) also contentwise. Also the library of Hamburgi world economy archives (HWWA) uses the standard thesaurus economy for the contents development of its literature.

A CROSS concordance between this thesaurus and the key word standard file is since 2001 in the structure. At this project also different institutions are involved like the German library beside the ZBW and the HWWA. Background: A CROSS concordance between different documentary languages supplies more precise hits to the data base and/or catalog users with with the literature search in group data bases and/or group catalogs.

Services

The literature can investigate over on-line data base ECONIS (library catalog) on the homepage of the ZBW and order locally in the ZBW or over document delivery services with the ZBW. With the literature search also a search service of the ZBW helps (free of charge, liable to pay the

The formal data (title, author, source, year etc.) in addition of the Econis data base are investigatable over the data base common library group of the GBV. However are missing with the search in the GBV data base for the contentwise description important the descriptors standard thesaurus economy.

Starting from 1924 this special library under the direction of William was converted to economics and sociological research library.

Future

As the ZBW went through all WGL institutes 2003 regular an evaluation by the Leibniz community (WGL), which by the majority positively failed. In the locking promotion recommendation of the WGL senate the ZBW was however urgently imposed to separate themselves up to the next evaluation - prospective 2010 - from Institut for world economy and change into a new legal form. The ZBW annual report 2004 deals also with the integration of the library of Hamburgi world economy archives specified by the Bund-Laender-Commission into the ZBW.
