Gerty Cori was the oldest daughter of a wealthy Prager family. It studied medicine at the German university in Prague from 1914 to 1920. During its study make friends yourself it with Carl Cori, which she married 1920, after her study conclusion. Like Carl, also Gerty was interested more in the medical basic research than in medical practice.
1922 emigrated Carl and Gerty Cori into the USA and 1928 received them the American nationality. Although Gerty and Carl researched always together, for the time being only it made an academic career. To it at a university even a Professur was offered only on the condition that its wife no more does not co-operate with him.
From 1931 on Carl led the pharmacology department of the university in pc. Louis and Gerty worked as his research female assistant. She received however no wages for it. 1936 came her son Thomas to the world. Soon the pair changed into the biochemistry department, for which Gerty Cori received the Professur after their Nobelpreis 1947.
In the year 1947 Gerty and Carl Cori kept the Nobelpreis for medicine and physiology for their work common with Bernardo Alberto Houssay over sugar metabolism. Gerty was the third woman at all, who received this honour. In the same year still with it Myelofibrose, a rare illness of the marrow, was determined. Seriously ill one continued working it up to its death with 61 years.
