Conte Giovanni Antonio Scopoli, also Johann Anton Scopoli (* 13. June 1723 in Cavalese; "† 8. May 1788 in Pavia) was a Austrian physician and natural scientist.

Life

Scopoli was born in Cavalese in Val di Fiemme as a son of a lawyer. At the University of Innsbruck he attained a medical conclusion and practiced afterwards in Cavalese and Venice as a physician.

A majority of its time he dedicated to the study of the animal and plant world of its homeland Tirol. It put on extensive planting and insect collections.

After he had worked 2 years as a private secretary of the count von Seckan, he began 1754 a place as a physician in a mine in Idrija in the Slovenian province Krain. He spent there 16 years in continuing conflict with the director, who accused to him to spend too much time with its scientific investigations.

Its 1760 publish Flora carniolica describe about 1,600 domestic plants, under it 56 up to then unknown. The 1763 publish Entomologica carniolica are considered today as Hauptwerk the insect customer. In the years 1760 to 1775 Scopoli maintains one moves exchanges of letters with Carl von

1769 went to Scopoli as professor for mineralogy and metallurgy to the mountain academy into Schemnitz (today "Štiavnica). In the year 1777 it was appointed to the chair for natural history of the University of Pavia, where it informed up to its death chemistry and Botanik. In Pavia he worked on the side of Lazzaro Spallanzani.

The alkaloid Skopolamin carries its names. In botanischen standard works the species described by it the additive becomes Scop. attached.
