Under goods traffic (also long-distance haulage, goods transport or transportation; Abbreviation transport) one understands the process of a larger change of location about material goods in the sense of a traffic service and/or the abbreviation for the goods traffic industry than special serve-oriented branch of traffic.

Goods can be carried with almost all means of transport. One speaks of the G., if the principal purpose of a transport is the transportation of goods or if a goods transport takes place.

One differentiates in-plant transport as a component of the production process within an enterprise, inter-company transport as link between different enterprises and/or between production and trade (see also trade).

Further distinction criteria are:

  • Accesibility (public G. and/or closed g. works traffic),
  • territorial allocation (within, transnational and transit g.),
  • Range (short-distance freight traffic, long-distance haulage),
  • used means of transport (railway g., road g., air freight, Schiffstransport, Rohrleitungstransport),
  • Kind of property (bulk, bulk material, liquid and/or gas transport, transport of solids),
  • Transmission size (bulk material, small property, Schwergut g.).

For the goods traffic special - depending upon qualitative and quantitative requirements at the transportation process, system environment, available resources and characteristics of the cargo - suitable means of transport are used:

  • Nichtmotorisierte transportation means, e.g. Carrier, seam animals, cart, bicycle, riksha, E-Bike
  • Goods trains
  • Motor vehicles (e.g. Truck passenger car; see motor traffic)
  • Cargo ships
    • Inland waterway crafts
    • High sea-going vessels
  • Airplanes (here v.a. air freighters) and other aircraft (e.g. Helicopter, airship, transport glider)
  • Haulage systems of the Intralogistik
    • Continuous conveyor (e.g. roller race, chain conveyor etc.)
    • Unstable promoter (e.g. tractor, stacker, crane etc.)
  • Pipelines (Rohrleitungstransport) and/or lines
  • Mixed systems: Combined traffic and/or Multimodaler transport
  • Special containers and container (container)
  • Special procedures and organization forms in the framework of the transporting enterprise technology and/or logistics

Different branches of traffic partly stand to each other in competition. Supplementing processes, like the forwarding business, the camp egg storekeeping or the envelope of goods are not added i.e.S. to the goods traffic and/or goods transport. However with the term "“goods traffic"” is meant colloquially frequently the summary of the processes transport, envelope and storage (TUL processes) (see logistics).

Suburban traffic

By short-distance freight traffic one understands the carriage of goods, if senders and receivers are locally so close together that the trucks are each day again back with the starting point. Also collecting individual goods in an nearby Sammellager or logistics center falls under suburban traffic, one speaks also of an advance and/or if the goods are brought to individual receiver by a wake.

Distributing fresh goods at branches of chains falls likewise under it.

Legally there is not this term both in Germany and in Austria no more. It is however colloquially still used.

Long-distance traffic

In long-distance traffic goods (goods) are transported over far distances, which have their goal colloquially outside of close range (formerly Nahzone).

A variant of long-distance traffic on the road (road haulage) is the regular transport service, or also German domestic carrier general cargo traffic, in which general cargo endings are back transported regularly from the place of departure to the destination and other transmissions. The dispatch carrier lets transmissions transport thereby to the receipt carrier, also to Hauptlauf mentioned. Destination of the transmission knows either the envelope camp of the receipt carrier or also a logistics center (STROKE: Stroke and Spoke) its.

A variant of the regular transport service on the road is meeting traffic. Here meet on the way vehicles of the carriers, who change their load container, change bridges, also for WAB mentioned or semitrailers.

Beside regular transport service gives it still Trampverkehr to road, in which part and complete charges, mostly the the vehicle attributes no general cargo endings, to which goals are driven, not directly to the output place. The vehicle planning manager of the carrier looks for fitting those, usually to the weekend at the destination that to the starting point, the operating yard lead back vehicle. The charge search is made by national and international Internet shipping exchanges.
