A governor general is the highest civil servant of a large area, in particular in the colonial context used.
- Russia: in the Russian Zarenreich the highest official of a province or also the superior of several province governors.
- Great Britain: in the Commonwealth OF nation the representative of the British crown in the independent countries (the former Dominions), as far as they did not accept a republican system of government.
