The Graduate management Admission test, better admits GMAT under the abbreviation, is a test standardized world-wide, in order to measure the suitability for economical courses of studies (English "Business Schools "). The test result is consulted of more as 1500 public and private universities and college particularly in the USA and Great Britain than an important entrance criterion for resuming studies (English "graduate") e.g. for the master OF Business administration (MBA). The GMAT became of the Graduate management Admission Council - a combination of numerous prominent schools for economics - konzeptioniert and in its order in authorized Testzentren in numerous countries against fee one accomplishes (momentarily 250 US Dollar). The GMAT is put down annually by over 100.000 participants.
The test is to examine the capability test participants for a resuming restaurant study (contrary to a "knowledge condition test"). It consists in its present form of an essay part, which two analytic essays topics given by 30 minutes each with to as answer expects; as well as two "multiple choice" - segments of ever approx. 75 minutes of length, a mathematical section and a section about verbal abilities, which analytic parts, English grammar and read understanding cover. The test is held completely in English, which it for humans their native language is not English additionally made more difficult. However it is in contrast e.g. to the TOEFL (test OF English as A Foreign LANGUAGE) no pure language test, but measures the analytic-logical abilities of the person rather who can be examined as described.
The GMAT test can be only put down for some years in most countries on a computer and is "adaptive"; that is called the computer selects the questions from a given pool and adapts the difficulty level (and thus the final result, see below) with each question automatically to the user, dependent on it whether the preceding question was correctly or wrongly answered. The test participant gets one in each section first as on the average with difficulty outstanding question submitted. If it answers the question wrongly is somewhat easier the next and the test result sinks, it answers it is somewhat more difficult correctly the next and the test result rises. The computer tries to find out quasi, which level of the participants still fulfills and fails starting from which difficulty level it. With the time the GMAT should become relatively difficult thereby for each participant thus, this is however from result view desired!
By the described test procedure as well as the large time pressure the Graduate management Admission test applies despite examined contents rather limited as relatively difficult and very unusual to most European students and requires therefore an accordingly thorough preparation.
The result or level test participants is determined by the procedure described above, the so-called "Score". The two essays are evaluated directly by the computer as well as of and/or with discrepancies two human examiners and to form together the so-called "Analytical a Writing Assessment (AWA) Score", which is indicated on a scale from 0 to 6 in half scores. This result is proven on the report on findings, does not contribute however at present not to the total result (total Score).
This total result consists of the result of the mathematical (quantitative) and the linguistic (verbal) part and becomes on a uniform scale of 200 to 800 points ("totally Scaled Score") as well as frequently also in Prozentzahlen from 1 to 99 ("totally Percentile") indicated. The provisional result is sent to the participant immediately after completion of the test indicated (for the participant of one of the largest advantages of the computer-based procedure), the official report elbow with the obtained results in all sections approx. two weeks later. The Score is then conveyed on request by to the universities, with which a test participant applied.
Average results: The average GMAT test participant reached in the last years a value of approx. 500 - 550 points (approx. 40 - 60%). The students at many of the most well-known and prominent universities point however average GMAT of point values of over 650 points to (approx. 90%), to some even from over 700 points (approx. 95%). Most universities point this average value of their students as orientation value out (gladly also for marketing purposes), give however no minimum score. This also recommended by the creators of the GMAT, among other things there the test a statistic deviation from the "actual" ability of a participant ("True Score") of scarcely 30 points exhibits, e.g. under the daily form of the participant and the selection of the questions by the computer. In almost - perfect result of 99% and/or than 740 points occurs now and then, is however necessary for no more university really, since for the procedure of admission also still numerous other criteria are consulted (notes in the Erststudium, personal record and professional experience, recommendation letter, letter of application, application interview, etc.)
Repetition of test: If a participant is not content with its result, the test can be repeated several times, if necessary also within a yearly. Theoretically the number of the repetitions is hardly limited, however it is to be considered that the test is again liable to pay the costs each time and the last five obtained scores all are conveyed to the respective university, so that this immediately sees whether a positive development is recognizable. Likewise frequent test attempts of many universities are laid out generally negatively for the applicant (maximally three repetitions are recommended). A once obtained point value remains momentarily approx. 20 years long stored, which accept most Universities of however no test results those longer than five years are past.
