Hendrik Witbooi (* 1824 in Pella/South Africa, " 29 October 1905 in the Karrasbergen/southwest - Africa) was in follow-up of its father Moses Witbooi since at the end of of 1888 "Kapitein" of the Orlam trunk of the Witbooi used with the Nama.
It had received and applied at that time a Christian education distinguished for conditions with mission arene caring for the trunk - to clarify around once the linguistic usage at that time exemplarily - as "the presenting negro" from southwest Africa. Nevertheless Hendrik Witbooi - very much to the disappointment its father - developed very own conceptions over its future chieftain role and practiced in it very promptly by its own splitting off from the main trunk. Of special importance was in this connection the vision maintained by Hendrik Witbooi in the year 1880: after this experience it had changed completely, was not also attainable for its Missionar any longer and its acting increasingly by religious illusion conceptions was determined. A remarkable achievement succeeded to it nevertheless - the peace treaty with the Herero (1892), disliked for many years, in order to proceed together with them against the German colonial gentlemen. Due to this alliance the Witbooi was already entangled 1893 into a very involving heavy losses fight with the German colonial force (with horn ring) and had in a further battle 1894 "honorably" (i.e. under keep its weapons and the concession of a limited autonomy) to arise. Hendrik Witbooi used this event as an opportunity to close with the German colonial power 1894 a protection and a friendship treaty among other things also the obligation for military assistance achievement contained.
This obligation Hendrik Witbooi accordingly fought with the rebellion of the east Herero (Mbanderu) of 1896 - together with the Herero led by Samuel Maharero - on German side and carried out the German colonial force even in the battle to wading hereditary suppl. (1904) effective support. Only, after the Witbooi had contradicted the proceeding of the Germans against the Herero and therefore had been disarmed and shipped as work slaves to German East Africa, Hendrik Witbooi quit the assistance pact with the Germans, announced to them on 3 October 1904 officially the war and introduced thereby the so-called Namaaufstand (1904-1908). Hendrik Witbooi fell already 1905 with fights with the colonial force. Its son Isaak Witbooi surrendered the Germans; the resistance fight was continued however by Jakob Morenga (Herero Nama half-breed) and the chieftain of the Fransmann Nama, Simon Kopper, up to their death 1907 and 1908.
Hendrik Witbooi is highly admired in the today's Namibia; its portrait ziert all namibischen notes.
