Cheek was born as a son of German emigrants in Russia. From 1905 to 1914 it visited a Russian High School, however at the beginning of the First World War in the Zarenzeit was interned. To the war he came to Germany and studied in Goettingen agriculture and became a late assistant of the technical university Hanover (1923 to 1924). Afterwards it leased a farm in Pommern. 1923 in Hanover it already attached the NSDAP and became in its district 1931 farmer leaders.

In October 1933 he became undersecretary of state in the realm Ministry for nutrition and agriculture, in order to introduce there one year later the so-called "„production battle "“. It concerned to keep by an increase of food production the imported goods as low as possible and to aim at so the ideal of a self-sufficient economy.

1936 he became director/conductor of the group of business of nutrition in the context of the four-year plan and thus Hermann directly responsible. Due to its experiences it applied also as a Russia expert and followed therefore in May 1942 Richard Walther as a director/conductor Ministry Of Agriculture. Its major task thereby it was to be provided for the supply at food in the war against the Soviet Union. Cheek went thereby quite vigorously to its new task.

From the "“twelve requirements of the undersecretary of state Herbert cheek"” for the behavior of the Germans in the east and the treatment of the Russians from 1 June 1941 it follows that "“rather a wrong decision, when no decision"” of the soldiers in the fight against Russia, the "“country of the corruption, which Denunziation and the Byzantinismus"” were demanded.

Cheek than its predecessor was substantially more pragmatic, pushed the romantisierte "„blood and soil of the "“ideology back and oriented themselves at the industriellen basic conditions. At the end of of 1943 appointed Hitler it the realm Minister and realm farmer leader and became on 1 April 1944 finally realm nourishing Ministers. This posts held it in the cabinet
