Boerhaave studied mathematics since 1682 theology and languages, then and since 1690 medicine, became 1701 lector and Repetent and 1709 professor of the medicine and Botanik suffering. During its time the medical faculty of the university became suffering the point of attraction for all medical students. In the year 1714 it received the clinical Professur and the supervision over the hospital, 1718 also the chair of chemistry. With the start of the Rektorats, which became to likewise transfer him 1714, it gave the speech De belonged comparando certo in physicis, to excellent its lectures.
1729 it gave its Professur up of the Botanik and chemistry and kept only the practical training place. In the year 1736 it gave the memorable speech De honore on resignation of the for the second time administered Rektorats medici, easements, where it as the highest honour of the physician prove to be servants of nature.
So largely its earnings/services to the medicine sciences were so large, were also its fame; from all countries of Europe one came to ask it for advice.
Boerhaave sought to use all results of the natural sciences with large scientific superiority to the best one of the medicine, put here in particular from the mechanical discoveries large value and finds in the fiber the general organ component, which causes most disease conditions by his tension and slackening.
The most important its writings are the Institutiones medicae into usum annuae exercitationis (suffer 1708, last Vienna 1775), into which most living languages translates, and which Aphorismi de et cognoscendis curandis morbis (suffer 1709 more frequently and). The first of these works is a systematic outline of the theoretical theorems in the medicine, in the Aphorismen gives to Boerhaave a text book of the practical medicine, whereby it proceeds from a most ingenious classification of the diseases. These two close with dignity to its Elementa chemiae (Par. 1724 and more frequently, 2 Bde.), which are in particular because of the accuracy of the attempts from value.
Boerhaaves most excellent pupils were Albrecht of Haller (1708-1777) and Gerard van Swieten (1700-1772), whoever explained the Institutiones and the Aphorismi. Two its pupil, van Swieten and Anton de Haen (1704-1776), created the Viennese school, at which finally Franz Anton Mesmer medicine studied. With its pupil Albrecht of Haller connected Hermann Boerhaave mechanics, chemistry and the direct clinical view and put thereby the foundation-stone for the modern physiology.
The city suffering established in the Peter church a monument, on which one reads its favourite saying to it: Simplex sigillum veri. Its was set up to it in honours in the Walhalla.
