Hugo Marie de Vries (* 16 February 1848 in Haarlem; 21. May 1935 in Lunteren) was as a biologist one the rediscoverer from Gregor Mendel set up Mendel laws. With its 1901 and/or 1903 published writings to the mutation theory he gave new impulses to the evolution research.

The main points of research de Vries lay in experimental plant physiology and evolution research. It concerned itself with plant respiration, insect-induced Gallbildung and over many years with osmose. Thus it put the basis for the establishment of discipline of the Physikochemie.

Life

Hugo de Vries came of to an outstanding Dutch family; its father Gerrit de Vries was Minister of Justice under William III., his nut/mother Maria Ereardina was the daughter of Jacob Christiaan Reuvens, the first professor for archaeology at the University of suffering.

Hugo de Vries showed very early a large passion for Botanik, so that he already possessed 1866 a complete Herbarium of the Netherlands Flora at the beginning of his biology study. The University of suffering, at which it studied, was too this time rather aligned to plant morphology, while de Vries was interested already at this time in physiological plant investigations. In order to adjust this deficit, it established an appropriate laboratory in its parents' house. Also its graduation over the influence of the temperature on the life features of the plants, which it locked 1870, had physiological investigations to the topic.

Its graduation a short structure study in Heidelberg followed William yard master with the Botaniker and with Julius Sachs, the founder of the experimental plant physiology. After he taught 4 years long in Amsterdam natural history, Sachs provided 1875 a two-year scholarship in peppering castle for him, while whose he researched among other things over the osmose in plant cells. Its research work over the mechanical causes of the cell aspect ratio was recognized as Habilitationsschrift. After he taught short time as a lector for plant physiology at the University of Amsterdam, he was appointed there 1878 as the extraordinary professor for plant physiology.
