Abu Zayd Hunayn ibn Ishaq aluminum `Ibadi (* 808 in aluminium-Hirah (with Bagdad); " 873 in Bagdad) was an Christian-Arab scholar and translator. Its latinisierter name reads Johannitius.
Life
After its medicine study in Bagdad, where he was pupil of Yuhanna ibn Masawayh (likewise a Nestoriani Christian), it undertook a study trip to Alexandria, Egypt, where it learned Greek. In Basra it studied the Arabic language. As a Nestoriani Christian it knew the Syrian language.
After its return to Bagdad he worked in the house of the wisdom. To whose order traveled it with colleagues to Syria, Palestine and Egypt, in order to acquire there antique manuscripts of the Greek sciences. In the translator school and/or in the house of the wisdom in Bagdad translated he and its student the usually Syrian versions of the classical Greek texts into the Arabic language. Thus these works in the Arab world became admit. Its translations are characterised by their high quality. In particular its translations of Galenus works are to be emphasized, whose Greek original manuscripts were lost. Later it was appointed on the posts of the Chefarztes at the Hofe of the Kalifen aluminium-Mutawakkil, a position, which it had up to its end of life. The Kalif, an orthodox and fanatischer Muslim, in the prison, let it intermediate close since it refused itself manufacturing a poison which was meant for the murder of an enemy of the Kalifen.
Hunayn ibn Ishaq was not also an author of approximately 100 own books, in particular to mention is the books concerning eye medicine and the Greek-Syrian dictionary without the translation work Hunayn ibn Ishaq"´s in addition, by its own books (e.g. the medical Isagogik after Galen and the eye medicine) the works of the antique sciences of future generations would have remained preserved and the knowledge at that time would not have been extended. By its created technical terms the Arabic language became only the science language. Its translation methods are recognized until today.
Its son Ishaq ibn Hunayn and the son Hubay" Ibn aluminium-Hasan aluminium-A `SAM aluminium-Dima"qi (+ 888) of its sister were its closest coworkers in the case of the translations, in particular for philosophy. According to the encyclopedia Kitab aluminium-Fihrist of the Ibn aluminium-Nadim (+ 998) translated Hunayn Platons Politeia and Nomoi, as well as its son the Sophistes. With its team Hunayn is to have translated also works of Hippokrates and mathematical works of Euklid and Archimedes, works of the logic of Aristoteles and Platons Timaios.
