The hammer ranks among the oldest tools.

Structure

The hammer consists of a head and a handle. The Hammerkopf has a course and a fairing. The course is the flat side, the fairing is the pointedly approaching side. The Hammerkopf can have a weight between 50 g and 12 kg.

History

Its ancestors were the fist wedges and stone axes of the Neolithikums. In the Bronzezeit the stone was replaced by a metal head.

Use

A hammer is used in different ranges of the manufacturing. Among other things to smashing, hitting and forming. So an article can be hit into another body, e.g. a nail into a wall or a chisel into the workpiece with a hammer. Also articles can be formed, like the sheet metal with the Dengeln or the iron with Schmieden.

Symbolism

The Teutons interpreted lightning as visible indication that thunder God Thor had hurled its hammer to the earth. Since Thor was responsible also for the consecration of the marriage, the hammer was considered also as symbol of the fertility.

In the flag of the former Soviet Union (hammer and Sichel) the hammer is located as symbol for the industry. Also in the state coat of arms the hammer was contained of the GDR as symbol for the working class.

Idioms

There are some idioms, which refer to the hammer. Here it would be first knows, where the hammer hangs and shows someone, where the hammer hangs to call. While first means the fact that with it the designated is been versed in somewhat very well is used the latter as synonym for if someone is reprimanded.
