When one designates industry or industry [] in the economy a group of enterprises, which manufacture similar products or furnish similar services. Besides it comes also to a summary of enterprises, the the same manufacturing process (e.g. Construction industries) or the same output products use. Enterprises are mostly organized on the level of industries (for example federation of the chemical industry; Retail trade federation) and collective agreements are locked (at least in Germany) on industry level. A classification of enterprises into industries, so generally valid for the German marketing area, mentioned makes the Federal Statistical Office since 1950. The current classification of 2003 (CR 2003) is based on statistic systematics of the industries in the European community (NACE Rev.1.1), introduced obligatorily by individual EEC regulations.

This term is used also in directories or industry books around finding producers of certain articles to facilitate, e.g. in the yellow sides.

In connection with the term "“industry"” stands also the term "“relevant market"” (marketing) and/or business field business surrounding field (strategic management).
