An ink scooter or a scooter ball is a recorder, which delivers a water-based ink over a write ball similarly as with a ball-point pen. In contrast to the ball-point pen, whose oil-based write paste exhibits a high tenacity, the ink of the ink scooter is highly liquid, which makes a light, sliding letter possible. For ink storage two systems are differentiated: Fiber memory and free ink.

Fiber memory

This is the older and design simpler of the structure. The ink is held in a capillary memory from polyester fibers and transferred over a fiber staff (ink leader) to the Schreibspitze. Since when copying first the larger capillaries with smaller retaining strength are emptied, the ink river with increasing emptying of the pin decreases.

Free ink

Here the ink in a tank is present freely, must be delivered however over a monitoring system, one uncontrolled running out prevented. Publicized ink is replaced in the tank by air, and at temperatures or air pressure fluctuations the expansion of air drives the ink from the tank. So that it does not run out at the Schreibspitze, before the tank a pile is set by plates, in whose gaps such surplus ink is caught. Since air can flow only by capillary slots in the plates into the tank, the ink is carried back into the tank, if air in the tank contracts itself again. In the core of the disk pack (usually an individual Spritzgussteil) is an ink leader, that connects the tank with the Schreibspitze. The advantage of this design is an even ink delivery and complete writing of the ink out contained in the pin.

Schreibspitzen

Usual materials are high-grade steel, german silver or plastic (usually POM) for the version and tungsten carbide or ceramic(s) for the write ball. The ball diameter lies usually between 0,5 and 1.0 mm, whereby East Asian products up to 0.17 mm are available.

Countries of origin

The largest manufacturer is Japan, where this kind of pin was developed into the 1960er years (important manufacturers are pilot, university ball and Pentel). In the last years beside it China was established as substantial manufacturers of cheap ink scooters.
